It’s Time for TV Stations to Collect Back to School Supplies

Among the many community projects local TV stations do every year is collect for school supplies in their market.

Schools across the United States open anytime from late July to after Labor Day, varying heavily by region and state laws.

Southern and southwestern states start earliest in early-to-mid August, while mid-western and north-eastern states often start in late August or after Labor Day.

Regional Start Timelines
• South and Southwest: Early August (e.g., Atlanta starts August 3, Houston August 11).
• Midwest and Plains: Mid-to-late August (e.g., Chicago starts August 24).
• Northeast and Mid-Atlantic: Late August to after Labor Day (e.g., New York starts September 3).

Dan McGrane, the marketing director at WOWT, Gray’s NBC affiliate in Omaha, posted on social media that “it’s already Back to School time! And being Community First means First Alert 6 is teaming up with Gregg Young Chevrolet Omaha to collect back to school supplies.”
