Nashville TV Meteorologist Retires But Leaves Behind a Legacy That Endures

Lisa Spencer, the chief meteorologist at WSMV, Gray’s NBC affiliate inn Nashville, will retire from her daily on-air duties after more than 25 years with the station, according to a News Blues article from July 7^th.

But Spencer’s legacy of championing local causes and her Snowbird Report created memories that spanned generations and touched thousands of hearts.

Spencer spent years building a second life of service away from the camera — fostering nearly 30 rescue dogs, organizing bicycle drives, and using her weekly weathercasts to spotlight animals in need of homes.

Lavonne Redferrin, founder of Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue, said Spencer has volunteered with the organization for 12 years.

“She’s fostered close to 30 dogs,” Redferrin said. “She’s welcomed them into her home. Just like her soft voice with the weather, she has the same temperament with animals. She has the patience and grace they need. Rescue animals need a little bit extra of that.”

Spencer has also been involved in book readings for children, bicycle drives, and The Last Minute Toy Store, which for years has collected donated toys and bikes to give to needy families at Christmas.

In addition, Spencer and Snowbird, Middle Tennessee’s favorite penguin, brought many smiles on school visits and snow day celebrations.

“Here’s a look at our Snowbird Report, the early version. I’m sure we’ll be seeing some more additions to this,” explained WSMV4 Chief Meteorologist Lisa Spencer on a WSMV4 newscast back in the late 2000s.

“No school! No school!” said Snowbird.

Eager children could not wait to hear those two words during the winter months, declaring a snow day.

Lisa and Snowbird were always ready to let viewers know if the weather was closing or delaying the start of school.

The duo took their partnership to the streets and traveled many miles together — from reading in the community and marching in parades to greeting fans at the Southern Women’s Show.

They also shared the stage during numerous “Surviving the Storm” presentations across Middle Tennessee.

Spencer may be retiring from her full-time role at WSMV, but the relationship of these trusted friends will continue to warm hearts in the memories created in homes across Middle Tennessee.
