Matt Bullock, a former meteorologist at WMBF, Gray’s NBC affiliate in Myrtle Beach, is now teaching eighth-grade science.

“It’s definitely a lot different, I’ll tell you that, compared to weather,” Bullock said.

Especially when it comes to his name.

“They call me Mr. Bullock, Mr. Block, Mr. B, and Mr. Butt Lick hahaha,” Bullock said.

No matter the name, Bullock’s love for his students and all things science shines through in his lesson plans.

“You have to make sure that you teach all different types of learning,” Bullock said.

He turned the media center into an escape room of stations to show students Newton’s three laws of motion and said he gets excited when students understand a lesson.

“When they finally get that aha moment, like the lesson is starting to click, I get so excited for them because they start to figure it out, start to learn, gain that confidence,” Bullock said.

The walls of his classroom are covered with rules, along with a painting by WMBF Chief Meteorologist Jamie Arnold and a signed picture from the weather team.

His students did not miss a beat telling WMBF News how the former weather reporter is doing as a teacher.

“It feels interesting. He knows the weather more than us since he was a weather news reporter,” Lis Cruz said.

“One time he said the news wasn’t paying him too much,” Brice Strickland said.

The two said Bullock’s weather forecasts are also fun during class.

“They’re very accurate,” Strickland said.

Cruz said Bullock helps her understand her classes.

“He’s really good at teaching. He makes me understand all the subjects we learn,” Cruz said. “He’s the best teacher, and I hope he keeps teaching here in the middle school.”

Strickland said Bullock stands out compared to other teachers he has had.

“Mr. Bullock is probably better than any other science teacher I’ve had,” Strickland said.

“I paid them to say that,” Bullock chuckled.

Bullock says teaching allows him to make a difference

Bullock said changing jobs has been a game changer.

“With teaching, I feel like I can make a difference in some of these kids’ lives,” Bullock said. “Just bringing a smile, asking them how they’re doing can make the biggest difference. It’s been a lot of fun,” Bullock said.

He says thanks to staff, and his students, this new chapter is one forecast he’s happy to see stick around.
