If you haven’t been paying attention to how AI can be used in local TV news, you might want to watch this video.

I did and I was completely shocked at how AI was able to read and understand a typical local TV news story and then write some tease lines about it.

Greg Derkowski

In the video, Greg Derkowski, owner of GetGreg.Live, a local TV news audience retention company, says he was curious about AI, and was playing around with a free AI-powered answer engine that provides accurate, trusted, and real-time answers to any question.

“I’m like, let me see what I can do here,” Derkowski says.

He went to a local TV station’s website and randomly grabbed a story and asked AI to write a news tease for it.

“It just kind of blew my mind with the first version,” he says.

The first version was a tad wordy, one that would have worked in the 1990s. So Derkowski asked for a rewrite.

Derkowski told AI he liked what it wrote, “but shorten it, point out specific actions viewers can do when they watch the story.

AI gave him one, punchier, with a clearer sense of urgency, and four reasons to watch.

“That was a eureka moment for me,” he says.

As capable as AI was in this experiment, what Derkowski says, you should approach it with “a degree of skepticism. The bottom line for me is it’s a great tool, a good assistant” Derkowski says. “I just wanted to show people this is a great tool.”

Derkowski says as far as he knows, no station is using AI in this manner on a regular basis.

That might change after people see this video.

NOTE: I was curious about how an AI service could read and understand a news story and write news teases about it, so I replicated Greg’s experiment.

I chose a story from the local CBS station here in Philly, CBS3, and followed Greg’s directions.

Here’s what AI gave me.

Write a news tease like you would see in a local TV newscast for this story:

AI:  Coming up tonight at 11, a major financial relief for millions in the tri-state area! Credit repair firms are set to pay out a staggering $1.8 billion in refunds to those who were misled. If you or someone you know has been affected, you won’t want to miss how to claim your share. Stay tuned for the full story!

Now shorten it and give it a clearer sense of urgency.

AI: Tonight at 11, urgent news for millions in the tri-state area! Credit repair firms are paying out $1.8 billion in refunds to victims of fraud. If you’ve been affected, you need to hear how to claim your share! Don’t miss it!

AI:  Here’s a list of the key facts from the story about the credit repair firms and the refunds:

  1. Total Refund Amount: Credit repair firms are distributing $1.8 billion in refunds.
  2. Affected Consumers: Over 4 million consumers in the tri-state area are eligible for refunds.
  3. Distribution Dates: Refund checks will be mailed out from December 5, 2024, to January 6, 2025.
  4. Average Check Amount: The average refund check is expected to be around $419, but amounts may vary depending on individual fees paid.
  5. No Action Required: Consumers do not need to take any action to receive their refunds; checks will be sent automatically.
  6. Verification of Checks: The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) will not ask for money to cash these checks, so consumers should be cautious of potential scams.
  7. Contact Information: For questions or concerns, consumers can reach out to JND Legal Administration at (855) 680-8991 or the CFPB at (855) 411-CFPB.

This list summarizes the essential details regarding the refunds from credit repair firms.
