A news segment titled, “You’re Awesome”, airing on WTXF Fox29, the Fox-owned affiliate in Philadelphia, is a win, win, win for the station’s news viewers, the station’s sales team, and for the individual people who are recognized and rewarded for their selfless contributions in the area.
Actually, there’s a fourth win–the station’s image.
Fox 29’s news viewers win because “You’re Awesome” counters the feeling many viewers have that “it’s so damn negative out there,” says Jason Martinez, Fox 29’s news anchor weekdays at 5, 6, 10 and 11p.m.
Martinez says he got the idea for “You’re Awesome” from noticing “people in my neighborhood doing cool things for others.”

He thought he should “shine a light on these people.”
He took the idea to his news director, Jim Driscoll, who not only approved the segment, but came up with the title.
The Fox 29 sales team got a win for signing up a sponsor, (what business wouldn’t want to be associated with a feel-good program like this), Moravia Health, a nation-wide home health care company. Moravia Health provides the reward, a $1,000 check, to the individuals recognized by You’re Awesome.
Those individuals get a win with the check and recognition, knowing their selfless service to others was noticed enough in the neighborhood to get them nominated.
“I’m looking for a people of service, somebody who is helping others for no gain at all,” Martinez says. “Pure selflessness, people working for someone or a cause they believe in.”
“You’re Awesome” has been airing for a year now on Fox 29, every other Thursday night at 10, and again the next morning on the very popular Good Day, Philadelphia, he says.
Martinez says the segments require a lot of work, setting up and recording the interviews, logging the video and editing the story.
But each person he meets just re-inspires him.
“These people are incredible,” he says. “This is why I do this. Every single person I meet, I say, you’re awesome, and had them a big check.”
Martinez says he’s proud of the campaign and hopes it continues indefinitely.
Which is a win for Fox 29’s image in the community.
