Brandon Lawson, meteorologist for WJZY, Queen City News, Nexstar’s Fox affiliate in Charotte, has been named the Climate Coverage Champion for the Charlotte area by the local chapter of Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL), according to a story on the station’s webiste.

The award celebrates Lawson’s work in helping the public understand climate change.

Whether it’s through his on-air forecasts, social media updates, or segments on Pinpoint Weather University for Queen City News+, Lawson has brought climate science into the spotlight.

“It is an honor to receive this award from the Citizens’ Climate Lobby,” Lawson says. “The impacts of climate change are being experienced across our globe, particularly with an increase of more violent natural disasters. Our Earth is warming; science proves it. We can’t undo the damage that has already been done, but we can slow down and try to prevent future warming of our planet by reducing carbon emissions. I am pleased with the growth of clean energy here in the Carolinas, especially with the different sources of electricity we have moved to. However, more work needs to be done, and it starts with getting the word out and educating the public.”

This is the second year that CCL, a nonpartisan grassroots group focused on national climate policy, has given out the award. Their Meteorologist Outreach Action Team created the recognition to encourage more local meteorologists across the country to talk about climate change in ways that are clear, accurate, and community-focused.

In addition to raising awareness, the Charlotte chapter of CCL regularly meets with Representatives Alma Adams, Moore, and Harris, as well as North Carolina’s U.S. senators, urging support for meaningful climate solutions.
