Broadcasters exist to serve the community, sometimes one viewer at a time.

Mike Rajewski

That was how Mike Rajewski began a post on social media sharing a story that KAKE, Lockwood Broadcasting’s ABC affiliate in Wichita, Kansas, had done about a 14-year-old boy who wanted to meet Frank Waugh, KAKE’s morning news meteorologist.

The 14-year-old, AJ Yell, suffering from a rare genetic disease and terminal cancer, got a behind-the-scenes tour of KAKE studios and got to meet Waugh and watch him in action during a live newscast, all thanks to an organization called “Wichita’s Littlest Heroes.”

AJ’s wish came true.

AJ is non-verbal, but whenever Frank Waugh came on TV, his energy and demeanor changed completely, his mother said.

“I would say, ‘AJ, Frank’s on TV.’ And he’d just come out of his room. He’d watch it.”

Throughout all of the trials in AJ’s life, his mom said one thing remained the same.

“Even when we had many hospital stays, we’d always make sure the news was on and the weather was on, and he’d always look up there, even from his hospital bed,” Yell said.

‘We are grateful to the Yell family for sharing their story with us and with KAKEland,” Rajewski said. “It’s moments like this that make me proud to be a broadcaster and reminds me that local TV stations still have the power to change lives. Sometimes one at a time.”

AJ passed away just days later.
