If an EF4 tornado hit your town, destroying 150 homes and killing five people, you would remember that for the rest of your life. That memory would still be fresh if it was only a year ago.
On May 21, 2024, an EF4 tornado hit the small town of Greenfield, Iowa, about 60 miles west of Des Moines.
On the one-year anniversary, KCCI, Hearst’s CBS affiliate in Des Moines, devoted that day to members of the Greenfield community who gathered to support each other and honor those who responded to the emergency — and those still working on recovering and rebuilding.

“Today, we honor the people of Greenfield and thank them for providing us with a blueprint on how to overcome adversity,” says Kristen Joyal, KCCI’s creative services director. “Today, the station continues to live its brand by bringing viewers back to the neighborhoods hardest hit for stories of strength and remembrance. Live team coverage started with KCCI 8 News This Morning and continued throughout the day.”
KCCI’s aired a 30-minute special, “Greenfield Strong,” at 4:30 p.m. on May 21, 2025.
