NATION’S HIGHEST-PAID LOCAL SPORTS ANCHOR GETS THE SACK
WLS sport anchor Mike Giangreco made a $1 million a year at one point anchoring the local ABC news cast in Chicago.
To people just coming into the business, that seems unheard of.
But Giangreco was a household name in the market and started at ABC 7 in 1994. He was because on Friday, his time came to an abrupt end.
No goodbye on-air, just a note from management that Giangreco won’t be returning
Newsblues has confirmed that the anchor and ABC came to an agreement about the termination of his contract which had 18-month left on it.
He wasn’t making $1 million a year anymore when he re-signed in 2019 but he was still the highest-paid local TV sports anchor in the nation.
The reason he left is because of an incident on air in late January.
He was coming out of a package when he made a snarky comment about anchor Cheryl Burton. He said that she could “play the ditzy, combative interior decorator” if she were cast in a DIY show. Burton complained to management and Giangreco was taken off the air.
General manager John Idler alerted the staff that Giangreco was moving on.
The 68 year old has not commented.
