CNN and MSNBC were quick to underline an unspoken contrast between them and Fox News Channel, by announcing they would air a commercial for a film about American Nazis that FNC had earlier turned down as ‘inappropriate”

“It Can’t Happen Here” is a short documentary about a 1939 American Nazi Party rally at Madison Square Garden.

In its rejection, Fox said that CEO Suzanne Scott decided the ad was “not appropriate for our air.”

The ad is now slated to run tonight  air during CNN’s “The Situation Room” and MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show” .

“We decided to dig deep and pay for television ads we weren’t planning to buy because we wanted to make the point that Fox News is out of the mainstream,” said the movie’s director, Marshall Curry. “It says something that some news channels trust their audience to interpret American history while Fox distrusts its audience and doesn’t think it can do that.”

For the record, MSNBC had rejected an early version of the commercial and suggested revisions be made.

It was that earlier version that Fox rejected, so it remains to be seen if the new version will pass muster with the network.

The film examines the 1939 rally held by the Bund, an American Nazi Party which attracted 20,000 supporters to Madison Square Garden on Feb. 20, 1939.

The filmmakers say it is intended as a warning about the current political climate.
