After more than 40 years at Scripps’ WRTV, reporter Derrik Thomas is leaving the Indianapolis TV station on June 28 after delivering his distinctive sign-off one last time.
“It was time,” Thomas said. “The business has changed so much. You have to do so many different things on a daily basis. I’m not young anymore. I thought it was a good time to step away. There is no one here who was around when I first came here. I’m the last man standing. We’ve got a lot of young people with a lot of energy and a lot of expertise who can handle today’s work.”
By his own count, he’s done around 12,000 stories in his career at the TV station.
Thomas started his career as a reporter for WMT in Cedar Rapids, Iowa before landing in Minneapolis as a reporter for KMSP.
While he’s leaving the station, Thomas indicated he might continue in journalism on an infrequent, freelance basis.
