KOLD-TV in Tucson, AZ has a rare opening for an Assistant News Director.

The Assistant News Director will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the newsroom, but most importantly will need to find ways to generate audience on all platforms and during all dayparts.

We’re looking for someone who can work closely with the news director, digital manager and executive producers and create new ideas to take our newsroom to the next level.

This journalist recognizes most people start and end the day with a mobile device in their hand and knows how to get people to turn on the television as well as continue to grow our digital platforms.

As our audience’s habits change, so must our workflows and focus.

We are looking for someone to help lead that transformation, while still managing day to day operations. That includes overseeing the producing of newscasts for television, the creation of digital content and presenting platform specific content.

He or she must have a passion for news and innovation and be able to mentor staff by setting goals, encouraging growth and holding people accountable.

Must be able to use research to own key content drivers, breaking news and weather coverage.

Must be creative with different coverage ideas and help MMJs with impactful storytelling by avoiding “press release journalism.”

The assistant news director will also be responsible for some administrative duties such as the schedule and content planning, but should know how to “surface” from those duties and tackle primary tasks. Journalists with marketing and digital backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Applicants must also be flexible and willing to work overnights, holidays, or weekends as needed.


  • Must believe in the power of local journalism and have excellent editorial judgment for weather and breaking news
  • Must be committed to managing compelling, impact-driven weather-casts and newscasts
  • Must help lead the charge when it comes to developing unique, enterprise content for every platform
  • Works closely with marketing, sales, broadcast and digital teams to create audience for television and digital platforms
  • Focus on social listening to find story ideas, learn what matters most to the audience
  • Focus on creating content specific to the platform it is destined for
  • Great people skills with emphasis on coaching, motivating and mentoring
  • Must be creative with on-air and digital coverage of stories
  • Help research, gather and check news stories for on-air and online in the most accurate, appealing, timely and creative way using all sources
  • Develop and maintain sources of information and knowledge about assignments, especially local and national news and weather
  • Leads story selection process through editorial and rundown meetings
  • Develop and lead the news planning process either through use of calendars or ENPS
  • Must support the visual and written storyteller; help producers and MMJs understand the power of people and capturing moments as opposed to “press release journalism.”
  • Be willing to learn or possess a broad and working knowledge of the viewing area, including people, places, things and history
  • Critique, positive feedback and training are a must in this job; must be willing to coach and inspire on-air talent and producers
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned
  • Must have flexibility to work any shift, including nights, weekends and holidays
  • Help plan special reports, promotions and other specials
  • Set schedule for news staff
  • Assist news director with recruitment and hiring
