Houston television news viewers first got to know Akin through her consumer segments on KPRC in 1995, something she did until leaving the station in 2005.

After a few years of teaching, she returned to Houston TV at KRIV.

Akin started her journalism career in the 1970s reporting for radio stations and NPR before jumping to television in her native New Mexico and then on to WPLG in Miami, all prior to Houston.
