A number of stations are also expanding their news coverage during the COVID-19 public health emergency.

NBC-owned WMAQ has expanded its 6 p.m. weeknight newscast to a full hour.

The additional half-hour bumps the 6:30 broadcast of the syndicated “Access Hollywood” (which continues to air at 3:05 a.m.).

It’s not clear how long the station  will stick with the hourlong format at 6 p.m.

Nexstar’s  WGN has added “WGN News Special Report: COVID-19 Pandemic,” hosted by Dina Bair at 10:30 p.m. weeknights. It preempts “GN Sports,” which figures since there are no sports to report on anyway.

Unless there is a “Scissors, Paper, Rock” competition going on somewhere.

We also noticed that up the road from us Sinclair’s WJAC in Johnstown, PA has also expanded its 11 pm news to an hour, citing the flood of coronavirus news.

So far, in its immediate coverage area, there are no reported cases of COVID-19.
